J. Xavier Velasco

J. Xavier Velasco is an award-winning Mexican writer, director and producer based in Brooklyn, NY. His short film "Juan & La Borrega" (2011) got a Mexican Academy Ariel Award nomination in 2012 for Best Short Fiction Film and had its US premiere at the AFI Fest 2012. His short film "Zerch" (2015) world premiered at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea and it was acquired by the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival for its DVD release in the US. Both short films were supported by grants from the Mexican Film Institute IMCINE. Velasco’s latest short film "Above and Below the Waves" (2018) world premiered at the prestigious Sitges Film Festival in Spain and it continues its film festival round. Velasco produced the movie "Mi America" (2015), distributed by HBO, and he co-produced the feature documentary "I’m Leaving Now" (2018), acquired for US distribution by Cinema Guild. Velasco’s narrative work is defined by the exploration of the otherly, set in an unsettling alternate reality and told through highly stylized visuals and emotional acting. Currently he is working on the postproduction of a new short film titled "Atl", which will be part of the Mexican Sci-Fi anthology feature film "Aztech" (2019). Velasco is also developing his first feature film.
